I was recently showing my buddy my home office setup and the short server rack that I had just
purchased for it. As I was fumbling around with the mouse and keyboard on the tray he started telling
me about a solution that he had seen while working with a private security firm overseas. Apparently,
they had a mobile command station that could be loaded into an armored vehicle and taken to any
location. It was a small rack inside a rugged case.
Inside the case was a collection of servers as well as a Rackmount Monitor with an integrated keyboard and mouse for controlling the servers. He said the Rackmount Keyboard Monitor fit in 1U of the rack and slid out on a set of rails once they were on location. The servers were then quickly tied in to cameras that were deployed around the perimeter by the security team. This unit also reduces the energy consumption as it eliminates the need to use multiple devices. I think I may have to buy one for my office. If it works in those conditions, it shouldn’t be a problem in my house.
