Rackmount Monitor Keyboard for a Home Office Installation

I was recently showing my buddy my home office setup and the short server rack that I had just purchased for it. As I was fumbling around with the mouse and keyboard on the tray he started telling me about a solution that he had seen while working with a private security firm overseas. Apparently, they had a mobile command station that could be loaded into an armored vehicle and taken to any location. It was a small rack inside a rugged case.

Inside the case was a collection of servers as well as a Rackmount Monitor with an integrated keyboard and mouse for controlling the servers. He said the Rackmount Keyboard Monitor fit in 1U of the rack and slid out on a set of rails once they were on location. The servers were then quickly tied in to cameras that were deployed around the perimeter by the security team. This unit also reduces the energy consumption as it eliminates the need to use multiple devices. I think I may have to buy one for my office. If it works in those conditions, it shouldn’t be a problem in my house.

8x8 HDMI Matrix Switch in a Sports Bar

While sitting at the bar the other night I noticed that the game I wanted to watch was on another TV so I asked the bartender if she could change the channel for the TV in front of me. When she picked of the remote and started to change the channel I noticed that she only had one remote control. So I asked how they were managing all the televisions with only the one controller. She pointed to what looked like a server rack tucked into a corner of the room. Inside the rack was a box I had never seen before. Apparently, it is called a HDMI Matrix Switch (she didn’t know that, I had to look it up at this website- KVMSwitchTech.com, on my phone).

This particular switch is an 8x8 HDMI Matrix Switch. It had 8 HDMI inputs for different HD cable boxes and 8 HDMI outputs to connect to the TVs. This is how they were changing the channel for the different TVs in the bar. She said that because the clientele is fairly predictable they rarely have to change the channels on the cable boxes. Instead all they would normally have to do was switch which cable box would show on each TV. What made it even more interesting was that this particular 8x8 HDMI Matrix
can be controlled by a computer locally or over the internet. Pretty cool technology for a little sports bar. Buy 8x8 HDMI Matrix Switches online

VESA Rackmount Monitor Idea for A Music Sound Room

I visited my brother-in-law the other day for Fourth of July celebrations. He is a great musician and I love inspecting all the cool audio electronics he uses. I was rather surprised to see a tilt Vesa Rackmount Monitor set up in his sound room. Below the Vesa mounted display was an American Audio dB-display level meter with its amber and red lights blinking away.
He actually has several rack mountable devices installed on some aluminum racks he hijacked from a dumpster.
Mounting the rack mount lcd monitor allowed him to view the activity on the screen from a position below the monitor. When he is pounding out a rhythm on the drums or playing the electronic keyboard sitting down, he can easily look up from his seat and see the readout on the screen. The Vesa rack mountable monitor tilts in the down direction giving him an easy view of the screen while seated. It was actually mounted at the highest point in the rack and then tilted downwards. This was pretty clever even if he is my brother-in-law. Just kidding!

KVM Extender Acts As An Excellent Solution for Long Distance Video, Keyboard and Mouse Transmission

Don’t you love it when something works as promised? This is especially true in the technical world. Well, this KVM extender is a prince of a deal and works exactly as promised right out of the box. A KVM extender is also referred to as CAT5 KVM extender, and allows you to operate a keyboard, mouse and monitor as far away 1500ft away from your hosting computer. That is quite a distance.

Let me try to put it in perspective. At the local high school there is a quarter mile track the kids use for track practice. A quarter mile is 1,320 feet. That means you could put your monitor, keyboard and mouse at the start of the track and your computer at the finish. Attach the KVM extender receiver to the KVM devices and then the transmitter to the computer. Next, plug one end of a 1,500 ft Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6 network cable into the receiver at the monitor end. Now, grab a hold of the other end of the cable and jog all the way around this quarter mile track until you arrive at the computer. Take the cable end you have in your hand and plug it into the transmitter connected to your computer. Of course, to test this you need power, but the KVM extender won’t disappoint you. Fifteen hundred feet is a long way to send a KVM signal and the KVM extender does the job without any problems.
